ABSTRACT Evi, Supiana, 09.05.1.1.1.00010. A Study of Language Variation Used by Kangean People. Thesis. English Study Program of Faculty of Social and Cultural Sciences, University of Trunojoyo Madura. Advisor: Diah Ikawati Ayuningtias, S.S., M.Pd. This study concerns the types of language variation theory by Holmes. It is intended to answer statement of research problems: what are the words language variation used by Kangean people And what are the social factors that determine the use of language variation. The purpose of this study to identify the words language variation used by Kangean People, and to identify the social factors that determine the use language variation. There are two kinds of language variation. The first based on the user and the second based on the usage. Methods of data collection used observation, recorder, and note taking. The writer was selected using interactive model of data analysis. Analysis of data using Miles and Huberman as model of analysis which is done simultaneously with data collection, data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing/verification. The results show language variation and social factors determining the use of language. It had been indicated by language style: formal and informal. Furthermore, social factors ; age, different sex, and social status also influence the language use performed by Kangean people.
