[ Anotasi Abstrak ]

ABSTRACT Hermanto, 09.05.111.000.76. An Analysis of Deixis in poems of Philip Levine. Thesis. English Study Program of the Faculty of Social and Cultural Sciences, University of Trunojoyo Madura. Advisor: Iqbal Nurul Azhar, S.S., M.Hum. This study concerns types of deixis theory by George Yule. It is intended to answer statements of the research problems: What are types of deixis found in Philip Levine poems? And what are the impacts of the dominant deixis appearance in Levine’s poems towards the beauty of the peoms?. This study aims to explain types of deixis used in Philip Levine poems and to explain of the impact of the dominant deixis appearance in Levine’s poems towards the beauty of the poems. This study uses uses types of deixis theory. Moreovore, this study is conducted using descriptive qualitative design. The data of this study is the word, phrases, clauses and sentence used in Philip Levine poems. The data of this study are collected by using content analysis method. This analyze found all types of deixis in Philip Levine’s poems. This study found person deixis, spatial deixis and temporal deixis. This study also found that a dominant deixis in Philip Levine poems is person deixis with 92 data, continued by temporal deixis with 11 data, and the last is spatial deixis with 3 data. The impact of three Levine’s poems can be felt by the author itself. The first poem “You Can Have It” This poem indicates that Lavine tries to share his concerns or even his admiration and sadness (about someone especially his brother because Levine loses beloved brother. The second poem "I sing the body electric" was written in a memoriam of someone who used influenced Lavine’ life named Wallace Stevens. Philip Levine wants Wallace Stevens not been forgotten by everybody, because Wallace Stevens as the father of literature influences him so much. The last poem “The Red Shirt” is about an arrogant ignorant someone who works hard every day until he forgets that he has a parent who always supports his works. Until the day when his parent passes away, he becomes very regretful. He is very rich but loneliness kills him slowly. Egocentrism covered by the tenderness of Lavine towards the people he knows well seems to be the characteristics of the three poems analyzed in this study.
