[ Anotasi Abstrak ]

Deskripsi Lain

Periwinkle (Catharantus roseus L.) is one of the traditional medicinal plants in Indonesia. In this study the leaf part of the plant is used as an instant powder used to lower blood glucose (hypoglycemic) and blood cholesterol (hipocolesterolemik). The purpose of this research is to study hypoglycemic and hypocholesterolemic activity, stability test, color and sensory test of instant powder of periwinkle leaf extract or instant periwinkle leaf powder (IPLP). This study used Completely Randomized Design with 2 factors. The research factors were maltodextrin concentration (10, 15 and 20%) and drying temperature (120 and 180ºC). The solubility of IPLP was tested by gravimetric method. The solubility of the powder is 61.91-64.69%. IPLP color is tested with color reader. The color of IPLP is affected by temperature, where the drying temperature of 120 ° C yields a high L* value (47.03), lower a* value (6.27), and a higher b* value (41.40), while the temperature is 180ºC produce value 47,20; 7.00 and 40.20 for the values of L*, a*, and b* respectively. The acceptance level of IPLP was analyzed by sensory testing using 10 semi-trained panelist scoring methods. The best IPLP of sensory testing is a powder with 10% maltodextrin concentration and dried at 180ºC. Hypoglycemic and hypocholesterolemic activities were tested using mouse specimens. IPLP at a dose of 300 mg/kg body weight can decrease blood glucose levels (83.17±1.79 mg/dL), blood cholesterol levels (43.08±3.83 mg/dL), LDL (17.53±1.45 mg/dL), triglyceride levels (70.33±7.29 mg/dL), and increased HDL (54.75±3.20 mg/dL) in treatment rats.
