Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan alasan dan dampak dari kesepian di dalam novel yang berjudul “Taken” oleh Kelli Maine: Pendekatan Psikologi. Persoalan kesepian dapat dilihat dengan menemukan alasan dan dampak dengan menggunakan teori kesepian oleh Rubenstein dan Shaver (1982) seperti Being Unattached, Being Alone, Alienation, Forced Isolation, dan Dislocation serta dampak dari kesepian seperti Sad Passivity, Active Solitude, Distraction, dan Socia Contact. Data penelitian ini adalah tuturan tokoh utama dan penjelasan pengarang dalam novel. Pendekatan kualitatif dilaksanakan dalam penelitian ini. Metode pengumpulan data adalah membaca, mengidentifikasi, menandakan dan mencocokkan. Data dipilih dan dilakukan oleh penulis sendiri. Analisis data dalam penelitian ini menggunakan teknik Robert K. Yin. Data akan dikumpulkan, dibongkar, menyusun kembali, diinterpretasikan dan disimpulkan. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa penulis dapat menemukan empat alasan kesepian Merrick Rocha dan tiga cara positif untuk mengurangi rasa kesepiannya di dalam novel Taken oleh Kelli Maine. Ada beberapa tokoh dalam novel ini yang dekat dengan Merrick Rocha. Mereka adalah Rachael Desalvo, Joan, dan beberapa karakter pendukung seperti pekerja dan pengacara. Dari lima alasan konsep kesepian menurut Rubenstein dan Shaver Theory, empat di antaranya memang ada dalam penelitian ini, sedangkan salah satunya tidak dapat ditemukan dalam novel. Empat alasan di balik kesepian Merrick Rocha adalah (1) Tidak Terikat, (2) Keterasingan, (3) Menjadi Sendiri, dan (4) Dislokasi. Hanya (5) Isolasi paksa yang tidak ada disini, hal ini karena Merrick Rocha dalam novel tidak dijelaskan dalam kondisi yang harus mendapatkan perlakuan isolasi karena faktor-faktor tertentu. Untuk cara atau dampak kesepian, studi ini menemukan tiga dampak positif yaitu (1) Active Solitude, (2) Distraction by Spending Money, (3) Social Contact. Yang negatif (4) Sad Passivity tidak ada dalam novel karena kesepian pada Merrick Rocha tidak mempengaruhinya untuk melakukan sesuatu yang tidak berguna.

The purpose of this study was to discover The Portrayal of Merrick Rocha’s Loneliness in “Taken” by Kelli Maine using Psychological Approach. The loneliness issue and its impacts were able to be perceived by discovering the reasons and the impacts of loneliness theory by Rubenstein and Shaver (1982) such as Being Unattached, Being Alone, Alienation, Forced Isolation, and Dislocation and the impacts of loneliness such as Sad Passivity, Active Solitude, Distraction, and Social Contact. The data of this study were major character utterances and the author explanation in the novel. Qualitative research was held in this study. The method of data collections were reading, identifying, noting and matching. Data were selected and mached by the writer himself. Analysis of the data in this study applied Robert K. Yin technique. The data were compiled, disassembled, reassembled, interpreted and concluded. The result of this study showed that the writer could find four reasons of Merrick Rocha’s loneliness and three positive ways to reduce his loneliness inside Taken by Kelli Maine. There are several characters in this novel who are close to Merrick Rocha. They are Rachael Desalvo, Joan, and some supporting characters such worker and lawyer. From five reasons of loneliness concept by Rubenstein and Shaver Theory, four of them do exist in this study, while one cannot be found in the novel. Those four reasons behind Merrick Rocha’s loneliness are (1) Being Unattached, (2) Alienation, (3) Being Alone, and (4) Dislocation. It is only (5) Forced Isolation that does not exist here because may happen if Merrick Rocha in the novel explained that he was force in the hospital or jail due some reasons. For the ways or impacts of loneliness, this study found three positive impacts such as (1) Active Solitude, (2) Distraction by Spending Money, (3) Active Solitude. The negative one (4) Sad Passivity does not exist in the novel because Merrick Rocha’s loneliness does not influence him to do something useless.
