Loneliness of the Main Character in Ann Napolitano’s Hello Beautiful.rnPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi isu kesepian dalam sebuah novel berjudul Hello Beautiful karya Ann Napolitano, dengan fokus pada bagaimana cerita tersebut menggambarkan kesepian yang dialami oleh tokoh utama pria, yaitu William Waters. Menggunakan teori kesepian Peplau dan Perlman (1981), penelitian ini mengidentifikasi penyebab kesepian seperti perubahan tingkat interaksi sosial yang dicapai dan diinginkan, kualitas/kuantitas hubungan yang rendah, dan karakteristik pribadi. Penelitian ini juga menggunakan teori kesepian Peplau dan Perlman (1979) untuk mengidentifikasi strategi penanggulangan kesepian, seperti mengubah tingkat interaksi sosial yang diinginkan/tercapai, dan melakukan aktivitas positif. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif karena data disajikan dalam bentuk teks tertulis. Data dalam penelitian ini berupa narasi penulis dan ucapan karakter-karakter di Hello Beautiful.rnHasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa terdapat lima penyebab kesepian dan empat strategi mengatasi kesepian yang digambarkan dalam novel Hello Beautiful karya Ann Napolitano. Penyebab kesepian yang ditemukan adalah rendahnya kualitas hubungan, pengalaman masa kecil yang bermasalah, perubahan status menjadi ayah, perceraian, dan kepribadian individu. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa faktor utama yang mempengaruhi kesepian tokoh utama dalam novel Hello Beautiful adalah rendahnya kualitas hubungan yang ia miliki, sedangkan untuk mengatasi kesepiannya, ia membentuk hubungan baru untuk mendapatkan hubungan yang lebih berkualitas.rnKata kunci: penyebab, strategi penanganan, Hello Beautiful, kesepian

Loneliness of the Main Character in Ann Napolitano’s Hello Beautiful.rnThis study aims to explore the issue of loneliness in a novel entitled Hello Beautiful by Ann Napolitano, focusing on how the story reflects loneliness experienced by the male main character, namely William Waters. Using Peplau and Perlman’s (1981) theory of loneliness, this study identifies the causes of loneliness, such changes in achieved and desired levels of social interaction, low quantity/quality of relationships, and personal traits. This study also uses Peplau and Perlman’s (1979) theory of loneliness to identify the coping strategies for loneliness, such changing the desired/achieved level of social interaction and doing positive activities. This study uses qualitative methods because the data are presented in written text. The data in this study are in the form of author narration and characters’ utterances in Hello Beautiful.rnThe results of this study show that there are five causes of loneliness and four coping strategies for loneliness depicted in Hello Beautiful by Ann Napolitano. The causes of loneliness found are low quality of relationships, troubled childhood experiences, changes into fatherhood, divorce, and an individual’s personality. Next, the coping strategies found are adaptation and task choice, forming new relationships, improving existing relationships, and minimizing loneliness by doing a hobby. The most dominant causes and coping strategies of loneliness are low quality of relationships and forming new relationships. It shows that the main factor that affects the main character’s loneliness is the poor quality of relationships that he has, while to overcome his loneliness, he forms new relationships to obtain higher quality relationships.rnKeywords: causes, coping strategies, Hello Beautiful, loneliness
