[ Anotasi Abstrak ]

Deskripsi Lain

The abuse of power by large corporations against society and the environment is a significant issue that frequently occurs within capitalist systems. This study aims to analyze how such abuse of power is represented in the film Dark Waters (2019) using Roland Barthes’ semiotic approach. The film is based on the true story of Robert Bilott, a lawyer who challenged the chemical company DuPont over its PFOA waste contamination, which posed serious risks to public health. The analysis focuses on key scenes in the film to uncover their denotative, connotative, and mythological meanings.rnThe findings reveal that the film represents abuse of power through the dominance of corporate capitalism that prioritizes profit over public safety, the manipulation of institutions such science, media, and law to serve corporate interests, and the intimidation of ordinary citizens who seek justice through class action lawsuits. These representations illustrate how power operates structurally across different social layers and how film can reflect these realities through meaningful visual language. This study recommends that the public and relevant institutions remain critical of corporate practices and highlights the importance of regulatory oversight through environmental policies and sustainable governance.
