ABSTRAKrnHanny Ummu Faiqah. 220511100023.

ABSTRACTrnHanny Ummu Faiqah. 220511100023. A Phonetic Analysis of Students’ Pronunciation Errors at SDI Al-Munawwarah.rnThis study examines the pronunciation of English monophthong vowels produced by sixth-grade students in the English Class Program at SDI Al-Munawwarah Madura. The research aims to identify the types of pronunciation errors and to analyze the acoustic features of students’ vowel production using Praat software. This study applies a qualitative descriptive design by combining pronunciation theory proposed by Kenworthy (1987) and acoustic phonetic theory by Ladefoged and Johnson (2015), focusing on formant frequencies (F1 and F2) and vowel duration.rnThe data were collected from twelve selected students who were asked to pronounce ten English words representing ten monophthong vowels, with six repetitions for each word. The recorded data were analyzed through auditory transcription and acoustic analysis using Praat software. The analysis focused on identifying pronunciation errors, measuring vowel formant frequencies (F1 and F2), and comparing vowel duration patterns produced by the students.rnThe findings show that students generally demonstrate good ability in producing several vowels accurately, particularly /iː/, /ɪ/, /ɛ/, /ɑː/, and /ʌ/. However, significant pronunciation errors were found in vowels such /æ/, /ɔ/, /ɒ/, /ʊ/, and /uː/. The type of error identified is vowel quality error in the form of substitution, where learners target vowels with more familiar articulatorily similar sounds. Acoustic analysis reveals that the most frequent deviations occur in vowel contrasts that do not exist in the students’ first language. The highest deviation is found in the /ɔ–ɒ/ pair (83%), followed by /iː–ɪ/ (75%), /uː–ʊ/ (67%), and /æ/ (58%). These deviations are characterized by overlapping formant values and inconsistent vowel duration.
