[ Anotasi Abstrak ]
Deskripsi Lain
This study aims to identify the types and functions of discourse markers used by the main characters in the film Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022). The study applies Fraser's (1999) theory to classify the types of discourse markers and Schiffrin's (1987) theory to analyze their functions in conversation. This study employs a qualitative descriptive research method. The data consist of utterances containing discourse markers spoken by the two main characters, Benoit Blanc and Miles Bron. The data were collected through observation by watching the film, identifying the discourse markers, classifying them based on Fraser's (1999) theory, and analyzing their functions using Schiffrin's (1987) framework. The data were analyzed following the interactive model proposed by Miles et al. (2014), including data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The findings reveal a total of 143 occurrences of discourse markers. Elaborative markers are the most dominant type with 69 occurrences, followed by contrastive markers with 54 occurrences and inferential markers with 20 occurrences, while no topic change markers are identified. Regarding their functions, discourse connectives are the most dominant function with 107 occurrences, followed by markers of cause and result with 16 occurrences, markers of response with 13 occurrences, temporal adverbs with 4 occurrences, and information and participation with 3 occurrences, whereas markers of information management are not found. These findings indicate that the main characters primarily use discourse markers to connect ideas, organize conversations, and maintain coherence throughout the film dialogue.
