Melalui kacamata epistemologi kloset dari Sedgwick dalam teori queer, penelitian ini diterapkan. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengkaji bagaimana penulis kontemporer seperti Douglas Stuart merepresentasikan dan menggambarkan identitas queer dalam karya sastranya melalui alur cerita dalam novel Young Mungo karya Douglas Stuart. Penelitian ini mengeksplorasi konstruksi identitas Mungo Hamilton yang berkontribusi pada perjalanan identitas seksualnya. Kerangka teoritis yang cermat sangat penting untuk memahami bagaimana identitas gender dan seksual direpresentasikan dan dibahas dalam sastra kontemporer. Menurut Creswell (2014), penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif deskriptif untuk menganalisis data, yang sangat sesuai untuk penelitian naratif. Tujuan penelitian kualitatif adalah mengembangkan metode untuk mengekspresikan dan mendeskripsikan fenomena sosial sebagaimana dijelaskan oleh Chandra & Shang (2019). Sumber data adalah novel Young Mungo karya Douglas Stuart, yang diterbitkan pada tahun 2022, sedangkan data terdiri dari narasi penulis dan ucapan karakter. Instrumen utama dalam penelitian ini adalah peneliti itu sendiri karena desain penelitiannya bersifat deskriptif kualitatif. Proses analisis data memerlukan model analisis data kualitatif yang diusulkan oleh Miles, Huberman, dan Saldaña (2014), yang mencakup kondensasi data, penyajian data, serta penarikan dan verifikasi kesimpulan.rnHasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa Mungo Hamilton menghadapi situasi-situasi sosial yang sistemik serta masyarakat yang heteronormatif sepanjang alur cerita. Analisis terhadap lima jenis lemari yaitu lemari pribadi, lemari sosial, lemari epistemologis, lemari performatif, dan lemari politik memperlihatkan bagaimana setiap dimensi tersebut menggambarkan perjuangan Mungo dalam melawan kontrol masyarakat dan upayanya menyembunyikan identitasnya. Selain itu, penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa lingkungan sosial menciptakan tekanan yang mendorong kerahasiaan, penyembunyian, dan penindasan terhadap hasratnya identitas seksual Mungo pun terlihat berkembang dalam lingkungan sosial dan keluarga di mana hasrat queer-nya terus-menerus dinegosiasikan dengan ekspektasi keluarga, norma sosial, dan ketakutan akan penolakan.

Through the lens of Sedgwick’s epistemology of the closet of queer theory was applied. The purpose of the study is to examine how contemporary writer such Douglas Stuart represent and illustrate queer identity in his literary works through the plot in the novel Young Mungo by Douglas Stuart. It explores the identity construction of Mungo Hamilton that contributes to his sexual identity’s journey. It is essential for understanding how gender and sexual identity are represented and discussed in contemporary literature meticulous theoretical framework. According to Creswell (2014), this study employed the descriptive qualitative method to analyze the data, which is very suitable for narrative research. The goal of qualitative research is to develop methods for expressing and describing social phenomena described by Chandra & Shang (2019). The source of data is the novel Young Mungo by Douglas Stuart, published in 2022, while the data consist of the writer’s narration and character utterances. The main instrument of this study is the writer himself due to the research design was descriptive qualitative. The data analysis process requires the qualitative data analysis model proposed by Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña (2014), which includes data condensation, data display, and drawing and verifying conclusions.rnThe results of this study show that Mungo Hamilton encounters systemic societal situations and a heteronormative society throughout the narrative. The analysis of the five closets, consisting of personal closet, social closet, epistemological closet, performative closet, and political closet, demonstrates how each dimension depicts the struggle of Mungo to fight against society’s control and try to conceal his identity. Furthermore, the study determines that the social environment creates pressures that encourage secrecy, concealment, and the suppression of his desire Mungo's sexual identity is shown to develop within a social and familial environment, his queer desire is constantly negotiated with familial expectations, social norms, and fear of rejection.
