[ Anotasi Abstrak ]
Deskripsi Lain
This study examines how absurdity, theorized by Albert Camus in The Myth of Sisyphus (1955), is embodied in the Underground Man's experience of freedom and his self-contradictory response to suffering in Fyodor Dostoevsky's Notes from Underground (1864). The study aims to analyze how absurdity is embodied in the Underground Man's experience of freedom and to explore how Camus' framework of absurdity deciphers his self-contradictory response to suffering. The analysis employs a descriptive qualitative method with a close reading approach, using utterances from the novella the primary data, interpreted through Camus' concepts of hyper-consciousness, rejection of rational systems, refusal of suicide and philosophical escape, inward revolt, absurd freedom and agency, and the rejection of genuine human connection. While Camus discussed other Dostoevsky characters but never examined the Underground Man directly, a gap this study addresses, the results show that the Underground Man embodies absurd consciousness through his hyper-conscious existential alienation, meaning a self-imposed estrangement from others rooted in his own awareness rather than in any social economic condition, his rejection of rationalist and utopian systems such the Crystal Palace, a symbol for a society in which every outcome is calculated in advance, and his persistent refusal of both physical suicide and philosophical escape. His freedom, expressed through caprice and self-assertion, is inseparable from his suffering, which he transforms into a continuous form of inward revolt rather than resolution. This same pattern extends to his rejection of Liza's offer of genuine connection, confirming that his freedom depends on refusing intimacy much it depends on refusing rational social conformity. In conclusion, the Underground Man reflects two of Camus' three qualities of the absurd hero, revolt and freedom, but struggles to fully embody passion, making him a tragic rather than triumphant embodiment of absurdism. This study affirms that freedom and suffering function inseparable parts of absurd consciousness that create each other, rather than opposing forces.
