Fenomena childfree, yaitu keputusan pasangan suami istri untuk tidak memiliki anak, semakin menjadi perhatian di Indonesia, termasuk di kalangan Generasi Z yang hidup dalam lingkungan masyarakat dengan nilai-nilai keagamaan yang kuat. Penelitian ini bertujuan menganalisis konstruksi sosial pasangan Generasi Z Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) terhadap childfree, dengan studi pada masyarakat Kabupaten Sidoarjo. Penelitian menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan jenis fenomenologi. Data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara mendalam, observasi nonpartisipatif, dan dokumentasi terhadap pasangan Generasi Z childfree, tokoh agama NU, serta anggota keluarga dan masyarakat. Analisis data dilakukan menggunakan teori Konstruksi Sosial Peter L. Berger dan Thomas Luckmann melalui tahapan eksternalisasi, objektivasi, dan internalisasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa keputusan childfree dipengaruhi oleh pertimbangan ekonomi, kesehatan, dan orientasi terhadap gaya hidup modern. Sementara itu, masyarakat NU masih mengonstruksi pernikahan sebagai institusi yang berkaitan dengan reproduksi sehingga pasangan childfree menghadapi stigma dan tekanan sosial. Di sisi lain, pasangan childfree melakukan negosiasi antara nilai-nilai keagamaan dan pilihan hidup yang diyakini. Penelitian ini juga menemukan bahwa pandangan NU terhadap childfree tidak bersifat tunggal, melainkan bergantung pada motif yang mendasari keputusan tersebut. Temuan ini menunjukkan adanya dinamika antara nilai-nilai keagamaan dan modernitas dalam memaknai pilihan hidup Generasi Z.

The “childfree” phenomenon the decision by married couples not to have children is gaining increasing attention in Indonesia, including among Generation Z individuals living in communities with strong religious values. This study aims to analyze the social construction of childfree among Generation Z Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) couples, with a study located in the Sidoarjo Regency. The study employs a qualitative approach using a phenomenological methodology. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, non-participant observation, and documentation involving childfree Generation Z couples, NU religious leaders, well family members and community members. Data analysis was conducted using Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann’s theory of Social Construction through the stages of externalization, objectification, and internalization. The results indicate that the decision to remain childfree is influenced by economic considerations, health factors, and an orientation toward a modern lifestyle. Meanwhile, the NU community still constructs marriage an institution tied to reproduction, causing childfree couples to face stigma and social pressure. On the other hand, these couples negotiate between religious values and the lifestyle choices they believe in. This study also found that NU’s views on the childfree lifestyle are not monolithic but depend on the motives underlying such decisions. These findings indicate a dynamic interplay between religious values and modernity in interpreting Generation Z’s life choices.
