[ Anotasi Abstrak ]
Since the symbols in Edgar Allan poe’s “For Annie” are unique and interesting to be discussed, this study intens to describe kind of symbol and to elaborate meanings that can be learnt from the symbol. Concerning with these matters, this study focuses on the analysis of the words and phrases in the poem that show kind of symbol.Symbolism theory proposed by Wellek and Warren to analyze the symbols in the poem.This is a qualitative study because (1) the data that are analyzed and interpreted are not manipulated. (2) the data which is described and analyzed are in the form of words and phrases in the poem. (3) the key instrument is the writer.In line with the features of qualitative research, the data collection was done simultaneously with the data analysis. There are three related processes in the data analysis; reducing data, displaying data and drawing conclusion. After analyzing the poem, it is found there are three classifications of the symbol,they are private symbol (P), natural symbol (N) and conventional symbol(C). The description of the three symbols that are contained in this study are 53 private symbols, 41 natural symbols and 6 conventional symbol. So, the total of those three symbols in “ For Annie” poem is 100 symbols. Finally, after identifying the kind of symbol. “ For Annie” is a poem that becomes the media of Poe to show his big love for Annie.
