Advisors: (I) IqbalNurulAzhar, S.S, M.Hum., (II) Dr. Masduki, M.Pd. The use of politeness strategies is one of the speaking styles which are usually used by people in order to maintain social relation in the society and to make the communication process between speaker and hearer go smoothly. Considering the importance of politeness strategies in a conversation and how to use those strategies, by analyzing this thesis the writer wanted to find out what types of politeness strategies are used by Lemuel Gulliver, the main character in Gulliver’s Travels filmand how the politeness are used by Lemuel Gulliver. In this case, the writer preferred to analyze the utterances expressed byLemuelGulliver. The data were analyzed and classified based on the theories of politeness strategies proposed by some experts; the type of politeness strategies can be bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, or off record as suggested by Brown and Levinson. The writer uses the Face and Face Threatening Acts theory based on Brown and Levinson and other pragmatics theories based on other experts. The writer usedhimself as the instrument of the study and he used descriptive approach in analyzing the written text. After doing the analysis, the writer found that there were five kinds of politeness strategies used; do not do the FTA (3 data), off record (4 data), on record baldly (30 data), positive politeness (8 data) and negative politeness (15 data) and on record with redressive action (5 data).It was assumed that power and love influenced Gulliver’s utterances. From the findings, some suggestions for further researchers are; it is suggested that they can conduct similar studies in different scope and limitation.
